Dieback - bulldozing our biodiversity (11-12)-Perth Metro
- Duration: 4 Hours (approx.)
Suitable for Years 11 and 12
Fighting the “Biological Bulldozer”: Can It Be Stopped?
Phytophthora dieback is one of the greatest threats to Western Australia’s biodiversity—impacting up to 40% of our rare and endangered plants, many found only in the south-west. This program brings science to life as students investigate the devastating effects of this soil-borne pathogen and explore real-world solutions to halt its spread.
What students will experience:
- Hands-on science in action: Learn how dieback spreads and why it’s called the “biological bulldozer.”
- STEM-based problem solving: Discover the tools, treatments, and processes scientists use to protect ecosystems.
- Practical conservation skills: Undertake a stem-injection activity to help safeguard trees and prevent further dieback damage.
This immersive experience empowers students to become environmental stewards while connecting classroom learning to authentic conservation practices.
