Forest Discovery Day (PP-6)-Perth Metro

- Duration: 4 Hours (approx.)
Suitable for Years K-6
Discovery days are an engaging, flexible and a budget friendly way to involve larger groups, multiple classes or multiple year levels. Spend an immersive and exciting day discovering nature in a forest setting.
Four groups of students (up to 120 students in total) will rotate between four different activities of your choice. Each learning activity is focused on encouraging students to explore and appreciate their natural surroundings in a positive and fun learning environment.
.
Choose four of the following activities:
All years (K-6)- Animal encounter (your choice of mammals, reptiles or raptors)* (EP) - Get up close to some of our unique native animals and learn about their special adaptations to the Australian environment.
- Habitat assessment - Does the jarrah forest have the resources necessary to support a reintroduced population of a threatened species? Students explore the forest as habitat by looking into food webs, shelter requirements and their vulnerability to predators, to decide which threatened species should be re-introduced to this area.
- Invertebrate scavenger hunt - Discover trees and their lifecycles, while investigating the world of invertebrates and the unusual inhabitants of the forest.
- Forest walk - Enjoy a guided walk through the forest, focusing on key plant species, signs of animal activity and relationships between forest inhabitants.
- Sense-ational Trail - Tune into the sounds and smells of the forest. Students engage their sensory skills as they explore the forest using blindfolds along a roped walk trail.
- Guess who – Students need to examine evidence and clues at 8 different stations to determine which living species has been nearby.
- Animal evidence - When in the forest, you won’t always see animals, but they leave their “evidence” behind. Using keys students will unlock evidence to determine a range of forest dwellers.
- Western Shield - Our wildlife is under threat! Learn how Parks and Wildlife Western Shield program is managing the threats to our unique native animals
- Plant adaptations - On a forest walk students will discover the range of strategies plants utilize to survive in our harsh environment.
- Catchment Model - Learn about catchment land uses with our three-dimensional, hands-on, interactive catchment model. Discover how pollutants get into our rivers and the impacts these have on the plants and animals that call the river home.
- Fire truck and Personal Protective Equipment ** - Students take a closer look at some of the firefighting equipment used by Parks and Wildlife fire fighters, including getting a closer look at a Fire Truck! Learn about what personal protective gear they wear and how it keeps them safe.
