Ages 3 to 5 yrs 

We have a number of incursion options and are also more than happy to explore other ideas and activities with you. Depending on your location, we can include bush walking and scavenger hunts, leaf painting and nature weaving also.

COST: One class (up to 30 students) is $220. Second class, $110 per class (within 50km of Bunbury CBD, please contact us for pricing elsewhere).

Incursion Options - Duration 45 mins to 60 mins

Clay Echidnas

Children will learn about the echidna and then use sticks and nuts (either through collecting them from around your Centre or using what we supply) and air-dry clay to make an echidna.

Additionally, the children can use nuts / leaves etc. to press into clay discs to make clay ornaments or create other animals, real and imagined.

Frogs

Children will explore the different aspects of frogs and their life cycle. They will learn about the different species of native frogs and listen to their calls. Children will practice their listening skills and play a game to practice identifying frog calls. We will finish up with the children making a handprint frog craft.

Birds, Birds, Birds

Children will explore the diversity of birds through looking at the many different types of features such as beaks, feet and nests / hollows. Children can then make their own binoculars and head out on a bird hunt, looking for laminated birds set up around the Centre or going for a walk around the local environment. Children will also practice using their listening skills to identify birds through their bird calls.

Bugs, Bugs, Bugs

Children are introduced to different types of bugs using plastic toys and explore the different jobs that they do. We can go looking for bugs in the garden or in nearby bushland or hunt through leaf litter (brought in) to find the plastic bugs. We can explore the idea of camouflage and habitat. Following the bug hunt, children can complete a craft activity such as butterflies, spiders or caterpillars. Or use leaves and things collected from the garden or bush to make a bug collage.

No Place Like Home

Using the story ‘No Place Like Home’ and taxidermy animals, children will be introduced to the characters – Western Ringtail Possum, Brush-tailed Phascogale, and Mardo and explore different animal homes. Depending on location, we can go for a walk looking for different animal homes outside and children can build a home for themselves in the bush (using fallen branches, leaves etc.) Or we can build a possum home inside (hanging basket drey) with the children helping in its construction and weaving in the peppermint leaves.

Cultural Awareness

Children will explore Aboriginal culture through song and language, handprint and honky-nut painting. Children will learn about Aboriginal tools and traditional uses of some plants and animals.

Know your Numbats

The Numbat is WA's fauna emblem, but this iconic animal is one of the most threatened mammals on our planet. Students will see a day in the life of a numbat, including its home, behaviours and food, then see how many termites they could catch if they had a long sticky tongue. They will make a crafty numbat to take home.

1. The school will need to provide crayons or pencils and glue for craft activities. Some craft activities will begin during the incursion but may be completed in class afterwards.
