Forest Discovery Day (7-12) - Perth Metro

  • 天數: 4 小時 (左右)

Suitable for all years

Discovery days are an engaging, flexible and budget friendly way to involve larger groups, multiple classes or multiple year levels and immerse them in an exciting day of nature discovery at a forest near you.  Four groups of Students (up to 120 students in total) will rotate between four different activities of your choice.    Each learning activity is focused on encouraging students to explore and appreciate their natural surroundings in a positive and fun learning environment.

The learning activities are focused on encouraging students to explore and appreciate their natural surroundings in a positive and fun learning environment.

Choose four of the following activities:

1. Animal encounter (your choice of mammals, reptiles or raptors)* (EP) - Get up close to some of our unique native mammals and learn about their special adaptations to the Australian environment.

2. Animal evidence - Australian animals can be illusive, and in the forest, you won’t always see them, but they leave their “evidence” behind. Using real world evidence and keys students will unlock clues to determine a range of forest dwellers.

3. Western Shield - Our wildlife is under threat! Learn how Parks and Wildlife Western Shield program is managing the threats to our unique native animals.

4. Habitat assessment - Does the jarrah forest have the resources necessary to support a reintroduced population of a threatened species? Students explore the forest as habitat by looking into food webs, shelter requirements and vulnerability to predators, to decide which threatened species should be re-introduced to this area.

5. Forest walk - Enjoy a guided walk through the forest, focusing on key plant species, signs of animal activity and relationships between forest inhabitants.

6. Plant adaptations - On a forest walk students will discover the range of strategies plants utilize to survive in our harsh environment.

7. Catchment Model - Learn about catchment land uses with our three-dimensional, hands-on, interactive catchment model. Discover how pollutants get into our rivers and the impacts these have on the plants and animals that call the river home.

8. Fire truck and Personal Protective Equipment - Students take a closer look at some of the firefighting equipment used by Parks and Wildlife fire fighters. Learn about what personal protective gear they wear and how it keeps them safe.

9. Fire site assessment - Examine different field sites, using a range of field equipment to observe and compare how the forest can respond to fire.
