Aquatic Discovery Day - (K-6) - Perth Metro

  • Duration: 4 Hours (approx.)

Year PP-6

Enjoy the great outdoors!

Bring the whole school, multiple classes or year levels to an exciting day of discovery immersed in nature. Discovery days are an engaging, flexible and budget friendly way to involve larger groups, multiple classes or multiple year levels and immerse them in an exciting day of aquatic discovery at a location close to you.

Three groups of students (up to 90 students in total) will rotate between three different activities of your choice.  The learning activities are focused on encouraging students to explore and appreciate their natural surroundings in a positive and fun learning environment.

You can choose three of the following options:

  1. Animal Encounter (all year groups) - Get up close to some of our unique native animals and learn about their special adaptations to our harsh climate. Choose from reptiles or birds of prey (CREEC only)
  2. Invertebrate scavenger hunt (all year groups) - Discover trees and their lifecycles, while investigating the world of invertebrates and the different habitats of the River Park
  3. Bird's Eye view (all year groups)- using binoculars and surveying techniques, students discover the waterbirds that live in and visit our stunning regional parks
  4. River Diaries (yr3-6) - Revealing the river’s past. Students glimpse into the past lives of those who settled around the Canning River by investigating historical records such as maps, photos and diaries. (CREEC only)
  5. Catchment Model (yr3-6) - Learn about catchment land uses with our three-dimensional, hands on, interactive catchment model.
  6. Take a Dip (yr2-6) - Students get the opportunity to sample and record the amazing and diverse macroinvertebrate communities that live in the waters of the regional park.
  7. Bush detectives (yrs K-3) - Australian animals are an elusive lot. Examine different evidence to determine what animals have left them behind.
  8. Pobblebonk Swamp (yrs K-3) - Discover what habitat attributes are important to frogs and learn to recognize frogs of the southwest by listening to their calls. With a special surprise at the end! (CREEC only)
